A maritime gateway to the world
Located in the heart of La Manche, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is a must-see destination for lovers of history, nature and gastronomy. With its rich maritime past and breathtaking landscapes, it offers visitors a unique experience.
The city, made famous by the film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, has five ports and the second largest artificial harbour in the world. This deep-water port, protected by breakwaters and forts, covers 1,500 hectares. It is a veritable ‘lookout’ over the English Channel, one of the busiest seas in the world.
Cherbourg, witness to great maritime epics
Cherbourg-en-Cotentin has always played a strategic role. Vauban considered it one of the two ‘keys to the kingdom’ and, thanks to immense construction work, it became a first-rate military port. The city also made maritime history when the Titanic stopped there in 1912, its only continental port of call in Europe. In 1929, it became France's second largest port for emigration to the New World, and today it still welcomes the largest cruise ships.

La Cité de la Mer, an iconic place
