Nicknamed \"the Pearl of the Val de Saire\", this village takes its name from Norse, the language of the Vikings. Today, this tidal harbor, which inspired many painters such as Signac, lives to the rhythm of the tides and the fishing seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stroll along the quays of Barfleur is the perfect way to unwind. After a walk around the harbour to watch the trawlers return, treat yourself to a delicious break. The terraces come alive with the unmissable mussels and chips, showcasing the famous \"Blonde de Barfleur\", a wild mussel caught offshore. There were so many travelers that two ships were needed. On the Blanche-Nef, the crew, excited by the presence of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, ordered several barrels of wine. At the time of departure, sailors and passengers were drunk, including the captain. Barely out of the port, the Blanche-Nef struck a sandbank, sinking the ship along with its 300 passengers. Only one survivor managed to swim back to shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the human tragedy, this shipwreck was a dynastic disaster. Although Henry I traveled on the other ship, both his sons perished. The king lost his heirs, and the poet Wace sadly sang: \"And never again was the king seen to smile.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village was burned by Edward III of England in 1348, then repeatedly ravaged in the 15th and 16th centuries. From the medieval past of the town, almost nothing remains except the Sainte-Catherine courtyard, where the only remaining medieval house still stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-daf1d1f\" id=\"strong-un-patrimoine-preserve-strong\" data-block-id=\"daf1d1f\"><style>.stk-daf1d1f .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:16px !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-3, #4f4f4f) !important;letter-spacing:-0.5px !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-daf1d1f .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:16px !important;}}<\/style><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>A preserved heritage<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Most of the houses in the narrow streets and around the port date from the 17th and 18th centuries. These are bourgeois residences, whose facades made of the region\u2019s gray granite create a beautiful alignment. The town, known as the \"<a href=\"https:\/\/gitesencotentin.com\/en\/le-val-de-saire-sous-loeil-majestueux-du-phare-de-gatteville\/\" title=\"The Val de Saire: Under the majestic gaze of the Gatteville lighthouse\" target=\"_self\">Pearl of the Val de Saire<\/a>,\" also features more modest homes topped with blue schist roofs and terracotta ridge tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sets Barfleur apart as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France is its 19th-century port and the ever-present sea with its changing colors.
